The Hinman Co., a Kalamazoo-based development firm, plans to make interior renovations to the former Grand Rapids Trust Building, an iconic 14-story commercial structure at 77 Monroe Center NW that is home to Louis Benton Steakhouse and a number of office tenants, and that once held the colorful Weather Ball on its roof.
The company will upgrade the first-floor lobby and the mezzanine level in the first phase. Once that stage is completed, Hinman will clear a portion of the structure's annex for an expansion of CityFlats Hotel, which is next door at 83 Monroe Center.
The work planned for the building's lobby will create a new entryway and lobby area for the hotel, while the mezzanine level will be turned into a restaurant and banquet facility for the hotel.
"The space will be available in the fall of this year. The total cost of this renovation is about $500,000. It's a beautiful space right now, and we can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished," said Katie Madonio, the marketing coordinator for CityFlats Hotel.
