First-Ever Sizzling Salsa Showdown

First-Ever Sizzling Salsa Showdown

August 1, 2008

Hot? Mild? Inferno? If you think you make the best salsa in the West (Michigan, that is), then bring it on! See if your salsa can take the heat during the first-ever Salsa Showdown at the Holland Farmer Market on Saturday, August 16.

The Holland Farmers Market and CityVū Bistro at the CityFlatsHotel will host the Salsa Showdown, the first salsa-making contest to ever be held at the Market. Individuals, teams, and restaurants are all invited to compete in the event, where they will be challenged to recreate their best salsa recipe using fresh ingredients from the Farmers Market. The Market will provide tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cilantro for all contestants, but they must provide their own “secret ingredients” and prize-winning recipes.

Teams and individuals in the Amateur division will vie for cash prizes, which will be awarded by a judging panel that will include CityVū Bistro Executive Chef Neil Overton. The restaurant with the winning salsa recipe, which will also be judged by a panel, will win a traveling trophy and bragging rights.

The contest will kick off at 8 a.m. on August 16. Contestants will have approximately three hours to make their salsa on-site before the public tasting begins at 11 a.m. The public is invited to vote for their favorite salsa for the “People's Choice” award, which includes an overnight stay at CityFlats and breakfast and dinner at CityVū. After the public tasting, the judges get their chance to decide whose salsa wins the showdown.

Pre-registration for the Salsa Showdown is required by Tuesday, August 12. Limited space is available.
The entry fee for the Amateur division is $15.00.
The entry fee for the Restaurant division is $20.00.
